Interior of St. Joseph’s Church

Interior of St. Joseph’s

In the hamlet of St. Joseph, east of Akron. It was built in 1904; the architect was William P. Ginther, also responsible for St. Bernard’s in Akron, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Pittsburgh, and St. Mary’s in McKees Rocks (Pennsylvania). The design is unusual in that the peak of the roof runs side to side rather than front to back, making a wider but shallower sanctuary; according to a local expert, the purpose was to get more of the congregation closer to the altar.
